Conference : National Saints: The contribution of religion and sainthood to nation building in modern Australia

Date:  27-29th September 2013

Venue : Mary MacKillop Place, North Sydney

A warm invitation to all RHA friends and colleagues to this upcoming event which is part of the two year program of workshops and conferences convened by the Religion in Political Life program at the University of Newcastle.

This is the first scholarly conference to focus on the figure of Australia’s first saint, Mary MacKillop, and the idea of national saints.

Papers are invited from across the humanities that address intersections between religion and nationhood; the contribution and histories of religious groups and particularly saints to national identity; Mary MacKillop, her life, her work and her canonisation; gender and sainthood, hagiography and the production of a saint for the community; wonderworking events and their outcomes.
