Voyages and Visions : A Symposium in Honour of Scientia Professors John Gascoigne and Ian Tyrrell (Emeritus)

This landmark three-day event brings together historians from all over Australia and internationally to share ground-breaking new work on empires and exploration, cross-cultural encounters, the history of science, American exceptionalism, and social and environmental visionaries.

Join us to celebrate the inspirational careers of two of Australia’s most eminent historians: UNSW Scientia Professors John Gascoigne and Ian Tyrrell.

There is also a selective postgraduate workshop day on Thursday 30 June.

Postgraduate students working broadly in the fields of Environmental History, Transnational and Imperial History (including U.S.A.), Contact History and the History of Ideas are invited to apply to attend a one day workshop to be hosted by the Mitchell Library and UNSW on 30 June.

This workshop is part of the three day celebration of the careers of Scientia Professors John Gascoigne and Ian Tyrrell (emeritus) of the University of New South Wales. Postgrads in small groups will have the opportunity to discuss their work and their field with John Gascoigne, Ian Tyrrell, Lisa Ford, Grace Karskens (all UNSW), Tony Ballantyne (Dunedin), Tom Griffiths (ANU) and Richard White (Stanford).

Attendees will also take a tailored tour of the Mitchell collection.

The day will end with a public cocktail party to launch the symposium, with a keynote delivered by Professor Tom Griffiths. Attendees will also receive discounted registration ($80) for our two day symposium on 1 and 2 July.

Numbers are capped at 30. Please submit an expression of interest to Lisa Ford ([email protected]) by 15 May. Your EOI should briefly describe your project, your expected completion year, and how you will benefit from the program. Candidates will be selected on the basis of best fit with our team and with other applicants.
